The sheer size and bulk of the Double Eagle makes it hugely appealing to collectors. There's something tactile and satisfying about holding such a large piece of gold in your hands.
Containing almost an ounce of pure gold, Double Eagles are sought after for both their numismatic qualities and investment potential.
The 1868 Liberty Double Eagle features a change in the way the coin's denomination was presented. In prior Types, it was presented as 'TWENTY D.'. On this one, this has been changed to 'TWENTY DOLLARS'. These Type 3 $20 Liberty Double Eagles were used heavily for international payments because gold was much more appealing than paper money. Even now, many Liberty Head Double Eagles come to the market from Europe.
The obverse design on this 1868 $20 Liberty Head Double Eagle features Liberty facing left, surrounded by 13 stars, with her hair flowing to her shoulder. Her coronet (crown) has LIBERTY in relief, and the date is at the bottom. The reverse depicts an eagle, wings spread, with a Union shield superimposed on its chest. In its right claw the eagle holds an olive branch, and arrows are held in its left claw. Above the eagle’s head are an oval of 13 stars and a pattern of rays.
