Morgan Dollars were minted from 1878-1904 and was the first standard silver dollar minted since the Seated Liberty dollar was discontinued. On the obverse, Liberty is facing left while, on the reverse an eagle is featured, holding an olive branch in one talon and arrows in the other.

In the 1870’s, one of the few major demand sectors for silver was coinage. The miners went to their congressional allies and implored them to find ways for the Mint to use more silver. They struck it rich with the authorization of the Morgan Silver Dollar. The Mint was required to purchase 2 to 4 million ounces of American silver a month specifically for the minting of Morgan dollars.
