History

Issued in 1936, the Bay Bridge Half Dollar commemorates the completion of one of the great engineering achievements of the early 20th century. Struck exclusively by the San Francisco Mint, this commemorative was produced in limited quantities and sold to the public to support bridge celebrations. Design

Designed by sculptor Jacques Schnier, the obverse features a striking image of a California grizzly bear, symbolizing strength and the state’s rugged natural heritage. Struck in 90 percent silver and 10 percent copper, this coin measures 30.6 mm in diameter and carries a beautifully balanced Art Deco style.
