Imagine placing one of the following coins on your desk. All your modern conveniences — phone, computer, TV — fade away as you gaze upon a coin that existed before all that was even a thought in a man or woman’s mind. This coin was used by people you’ll never meet. Perhaps they used it to buy grapes at the market, to pay taxes, or as a wedding gift for a beloved child.
In the lesson of the widow’s mite, Jesus saw a widow put two small coins in the temple treasury and remarked to his disciples that she had given more than all the contributors, because in her poverty, she gave all she had. The coin referred to was a lepton, a small coin. When the King James Bible was published, there was a similarly small coin in circulation called a “mite.” Hence the lepton was called a mite.
