It was 1905 and American coins had featured the same designs for over 50 years. President Roosevelt wanted our nation to have coinage whose beauty was comparable to those of the ancient Greeks.

Roosevelt chose renowned sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens to redesign American coinage, resulting in the world-famous Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle.  After Saint-Gaudens died in 1907, Roosevelt had to find another designer to create a coin to celebrate the centennial of Abraham Lincoln’s birth.

Victor David Brenner, an American sculptor, was chosen.  Because the Indian Head cent had been in use since 1859, it was the perfect choice for a new look. Brenner worked on the Lincoln Head cent for over a year, and in August 1909 it was circulated for the first time.

Controversy soon followed when it was noticed that Brenner included his initials on the reverse of the coin. Some complained that the initials were too large while others felt that they resulted in unfair advertising for Brenner.

The Mint decided to eliminate the initials and produce the coins without them.  The 1909 Lincoln Cent is the only year that features the “VDB” and less than 2% of them were struck at the San Francisco Mint.

Today, the VDB-S cents are one of the most sought-after popular coins in American numismatics.

Fast forward to 1955. The Lincoln Cent is still in production and the controversy about the coin is a distant memory.
