The Austrian Philharmonic coins are considered some of the most beautiful coins in the world. Their subject matter makes them quite unique in the world of coins. Instead of coats of arms, animals or national symbols, musical instruments cover both sides.
First introduced in 1989, the Austrian Philharmonic was struck in both One-Quarter Troy Ounce and One Troy Ounce that year and in 1990. The next year, 1991, the One-Tenth Troy Ounce coin was added.
The 1989 One Troy Ounce started out as a 2,000 Austrian Schilling coin but when the Euro became the new coin of the European Union members. The One-Tenth Troy Ounce went from 200 Schillings to 10 Euros
On the obverse is the “Great Organ” in the Musikverein, which is the name of the Concert Hall in Vienna. On the upper periphery is “REPUBLIK OSTERREICH,” which is “Republic of Austria.” Immediately below the Great Organ is “1/10 UNZE GOLD 999.9 2024” which, obviously is “One-Tenth Ounce Gold .9999 2024.” On the bottom periphery is the denomination “10 EUROS.”
The reverse of the coin depicts a group of musical instruments with a cello, violins, a harp, bassoon, and a Vienna horn, beautifully displayed with the legend “WIENER PHILHARMONIKER,” for the ‘Vienna Philharmonic.”
