The 2024 American Silver Eagle bullion coin is a great example of American artistry and symbolism. The obverse, which has not changed since its inception in 1986, is a faithful representation of Adolph Weinman’s “Walking Liberty” design.
That design, with an allegorical representation of Miss Liberty, walking to the viewer’s left shows her right hand outstretched as a friendly gesture. In her left arm she cradles olive branches. She is wearing flowing robes and has the stars and stripes about her shoulders. There is the sun rising behind her and symbolically shining on her. Above her is the word “LIBERTY,” in the open right field is “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and below her is the current date of striking.
The reverse, which was re-designed in 2021, depicts an eagle in flight about to land. It is also carrying an olive branch. Around the periphery are the phrases, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “ONE DOLLAR,” “1 OZ FINE SILVER,” and above that is “E PLURIBUS UNUM.” The design was created by coin designer Emily S. Damstra.
This coin was struck at the West Point Mint, so it carries a “W” mintmark. Thiis coin has been graded as MS70 and is housed in a Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) holder that also depicts the Statue of Liberty on the insert.
The insert also states, “STRUCK AT THE WEST POINT MINT,” and also carried the designation of being a “FIRST STRIKE.” The MS70 grade means that the coin has no noticeable marks or blemishes, and the First Strike designation means it was delivered to PCGS for grading within 30 days of release. PCGS was one of the first independent, third-party grading services and their grading is recognized and accepted worldwide.
