History

Sovereign denomination coinage is intimately tied to Great Britain. The venerable Royal Mint, of London, has been manufacturing gold sovereign coins since they were first designed and struck in 1817.
King Charles III was coronated on May 6, 2023 after the death of his long-serving mother, Queen Elizabeth II, who passed on September 8, 2022. These coins bear the likeness of the new monarch.

Design

To honor the new monarch, coins are just beginning to be struck now bearing his royal coinage portrait. This is one of the most impressive sets of gold proof coins.
This magnificent set comprises 5 gold proof coins:
  • A Quarter-Sovereign
  • A Half-Sovereign
  • A Sovereign
  • A Double-Sovereign
  • A Five-Sovereign

These new proof coins depict the very first coinage portrait of King Charles III, on the obverse. The portrait likeness was crafted by renowned British sculptor Martin Jennings.
The King’s portrait has him facing to the left, the opposite direction to that of his mother, and the previous queen, his mother, Queen Elizabeth II. Around the King’s portrait is the inscription in Latin “CHARLES III – DEI – GRA – REX – FID – DEF” which translates to “CHARLES III, by the Grace of God, Defender of the Faith.”
The reverse of each coin continues to display the depiction of Saint George slaying the dragon by Benedetto Pistrucci, which was first used on sovereign coins in 1817.
Each coin has a proof strike and is struck in 22 carat gold which is .9167 Fine gold. The entire five-coin proof set contains 69.9 grams of gold which equals 2.0598 troy ounces of pure gold.
This complete 5-coin set is limited to an extremely limited mintage of only 450 sets worldwide. It was completely sold out at the Royal Mint when it was briefly offered.
