The San Francisco Mint was constructed shortly after gold was discovered in California in 1849. The government felt that it would be safer and easier to convert the gold ore into coinage locally than by shipping it across the country from California to Philadelphia and back again.Morgan Silver Dollars were struck at the San Francisco Mint starting in the Morgan design’s inaugural year of 1878. This is a run of 5 consecutive years of San Francisco coins from 1878 through 1882.
‘S’ Mint Morgan Silver Dollars are well-known to be well-struck and often highly reflective coins. They typically are very lustrous and flashy coins. This collection is graded MS64 by PCGS, one of the largest and most respected independent, third-party grading services.
These silver dollars were named after their designer, George T. Morgan, an engraver at the Philadelphia Mint. The obverse depicts Miss Liberty, and the reverse displays an American Bald Eagle with outstretched wings.
This grouping is well-matched and attractive. The reverse depicts an American Bald Eagle with outstretched wings and arrows in one talon representing war and an olive branch representing peace in the other.
