2024 1/10 oz British Gold Britannia (BU)
With the passing of Queen Elizabeth II in September of 2022, her son, Prince Charles ascended to the throne. This required a coronation of a new monarch as well as new coinage designs.
The Royal Mint created outstanding new designs. The obverse has a portrait of the new king, facing to the left, with “CHARLES III – D – G – REX – F – D” and the denomination, “10 POUNDS,” around the periphery. The legend, in abbreviated Latin, translates to “CHARLES III – BY THE GRACE OF GOD, KING, DEFENDER OF THE FAITH.”
The fields of the obverse also bear the Royal Mint’s guilloche design. This design is comprised of intertwining bands that repeat in a crossing interval pattern. The idea of using this pattern is to make counterfeiting of these new Britannia coins much more difficult to copy and resemble accurately. The Royal Mint prides itself on adding these measures to make their coins more desirable and secure.
The reverse depicts the allegorical figure of Britannia, which is known the world over. She stands against a strong gale, showing her strength. This figure was first displayed on coinage in Roman times. Britannia holds a trident, for defense, in her right hand. In her left hand is an olive branch as well as a shield bearing the Union Jack design. She is adorned in flowing robes. The reverse design also includes surface animation, micro text, and tincture lines as anti-counterfeiting measures.
Because these coins are backed by the full faith and credit of the British government, and they are struck by one of the world’s oldest mints to the highest manufacturing and purity standards, these coins are acceptable in Precious Metal Individual Retirement Accounts.
