The Canadian Maple Leaf was first struck in 1979. At the time, the only other major gold bullion coin in Troy Ounce increments being struck was the South African Krugerrand.
Between 1979 and 1982, the One Troy Ounce Canadian Maple Leaf, was the only size struck and it was made of .999 Fine Gold. Beginning in 1982, the Canadian Royal Mint changed the fineness to .9999 Fine Gold – the first Gold Bullion to be struck in “Four Nines” .9999 Fine Gold. Additionally, One-Quarter and One-Tenth Troy Ounce coins were also struck in that year. These One-Tenth Troy Ounce coins bear a Five Dollar denomination and have been struck annually since their inception.
These One Tenth Troy Ounce gold coins offer the purest gold coins in a very affordable price point. In fact, the Royal Canadian Mint, as the world price of gold rose, even added a One-Twentieth Troy Ounce size in 1994 and a One Gram size in 2014.
The obverse of the coin depicts a new portrait of King Charles III by Steven Rosati, a Canadian artist. The King faces to the left, as the prior monarch, his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, had faced to the right. The monarch is surrounded by “CHARLES III” on the upper periphery and “5 DOLLARS – 2024,” at the lower periphery.
The reverse depicts a large Maple Leaf. On the upper periphery is “CANADA,” while the lower periphery displays “FINE GOLD 1/10 OZ OR PUR,” and on each side is “9999.”
This coin feature a very innovative pattern that diffracts as light radiates across it. The radial lines in the fields were engraved into the original dies by the Royal Canadian Mint so that they are deeply impressed into the metal. This diffracting pattern provides yet another measure of security against counterfeiting.
