History
The Morgan Dollar is one of the most iconic American coins produced by the United States Mint. It was minted from 1878-1904 and then again in 1921, and represents the growth and westward expansion of America. The introduction of the dollar was sanctioned under the Bland–Allison Act. After the enactment of the 1873 legislation, mining interests pushed for the reinstatement of free silver, wherein the Mint would accept all presented silver and convert it into coin. However, instead of this, the Bland–Allison Act was enacted, mandating the Treasury to buy between two and four million dollars' worth of silver monthly at market rates for coining into dollars. Ultimately, the Morgan Dollar provided the fuel that powered the growth of American commerce for over a half century.Design
The coin is named after its designer, United States Mint Assistant Engraver George T. Morgan. The obverse depicts a profile portrait representing Liberty, modeled by Anna Willess Williams, while the reverse depicts an eagle with wings outstretched. Interestingly, Williams only modeled for Morgan when she was assured her identity would be kept secret. Shortly after the Morgan Dollar appeared, however, her name was revealed. She was never comfortable with the attention this drew, instead dismissing this period as "an incidence of my youth."The Set
