History

In 2006 the United States Mint created a new version of an old coin. The Mint took James Earle Fraser’s iconic Buffalo Nickel design and adapted it for a 1 Troy Ounce gold coin. But it wasn’t just any gold coin – it would be the very first .9999 Fine Gold bullion coin that it ever minted.
The obverse of the coin was a composite of a number of Native American chiefs who sat for Fraser. The reverse depicted an American Bison, which was modeled after Black Diamond, a bison that lived in the Central Park Zoo in New York. Just as on the nickel, the Buffalo was standing on a mound.

Design

It was first struck in 2006 and continues annually to the present. This 1 Troy Ounce coin bears a $50 denomination and is struck in both Brilliant Uncirculated and Proof manufactures. Because of its purity and the fact that they are struck by the US Mint, they do qualify for including in Precious Metals IRAs.
In 2008, 3 additional fractional coins were also struck - a Half Ounce ($25), a Quarter Ounce ($10) and a Tenth Ounce ($5) coins.
This listing at this special price is for any date of American Buffalo bullion coin and it will be of either Brilliant Uncirculated or Proof manufacture. We cannot accept requests for specific dates of coins.
