The New Orleans Mint is a truly historic United States branch mint. It opened in 1838 and the reason a mint was built in New Orleans was because of its strategic location on the Mississippi River. At that time, New Orleans was the fifth largest city in the united states. Large quantities of gold from Mexico and South America passed through the New Orleans port. The New Orleans Mint was fully operational until 1861, when Louisiana seceded from the Union and joined the Confederate States of America. For a short period of time, the New Orleans Mint continued to strike coins with the Gold and Silver bullion that was stored there.
The Confederacy had plans to strike its own coinage, but obtaining more raw bullion became problematic. Eventually the Mint building quartered Confederate troops until the Union forces regained control of the city.
The Mint building was reopened as an Assay Office in 1876 and it later began minting capabilities once again in 1879. It operated as an active mint for 30 more years.
This is a wonderful set of 7 consecutive years of New Orleans Mint silver dollars from 1898 through 1904. The coins were graded and encapsulated by PCGS, one of the largest and most important independent, third-party grading services. All of the coins are well-matched MS64 graded coins.
