History
Silver, much like gold, has been the admired as a precious metal for centuries. Coins, utensils, jewelry, and household items have all been made of silver.
In the 20th Century, silver refiners and manufacturers grew dramatically in number and competition was fierce. Companies wanted to offer new products to beat the competition and increase market share.
Design
As the price of silver generally was fairly low, and the larger the bar the smaller the per ounce premium was, so larger and larger bars were manufactured. The popular sizes were 1, 5, 10, and 100 Troy Ounces and other sizes were added.
The Kilo, at 32.15 Troy Ounces,  became a popular size, being much larger than a 10 Troy Ounce bar but smaller than a 100 Troy Ounce bar. This convenient size allows for lower premiums per ounce so one gets more silver for their money.
The bars, even at 32.15 Troy Ounces are still small enough to comfortably fit in a safe or safe deposit box, Most of these bars are designed so that they are stackable, which makes them even more convenient.
The front of these bars typically display the name and/or logo of the refinery or manufacturer. Other important information is generally included such as the weight (32.15 Troy Ounces and/or 1,000 grams), purity (.999 or .9999), and possibly a serial number that is linked to that specific bar.
The back of the bar is typically blank or has some type of geometric pattern for style or to make counterfeiting more difficult.
