Design
The obverse of the coin is a modern rendition of Adolph Weinman’s “Walking Liberty Half Dollar,” that was struck between 1916 and 1947. Liberty wears flowing robes and a flag wrapped around her. She embraces an olive branch, and the sun rises next to her. The word “LIBERTY” is on the upper periphery, the date is on the lower periphery and the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST,” is in the right field/
The reverse of the coin is an original design by the famed artist, John Mercanti, who served as the Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. The design displays a large American Bald Eagle with a shield on its chest. The eagle has arrows and an olive branch in separate talons. A ribbon in its beak is inscribed “E PLURIBUS UNUM.” There are 13 5-pointed stars arranged above the eagle. The periphery contains “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “ONE OUNCE FINE SILVER,” and the denomination “ONE DOLLAR.” This is one of Mercanti’s most well-known and appreciated designs.
