The American Silver Eagle program began in 1986. It was an immediate success and continue to grow and become a worldwide sensation. By 2008, mintages had grown significantly, and demand was very strong. The American Silver Eagle coins had a popular obverse design. It utilized the original concept that became our Walking Liberty Half Dollar series of 1916 to 1947. Adolph Weinman created an iconic design displaying an allegorical representation of Miss Liberty, walking to the left. Adorned in flowing robes and an American flag, her right hand is outstretched in friendship. She cradles bundles of olive branches, as a radiant sun rises behind her. “LIBERTY,” is above her, “IN GOD WE TRUST,” is to the right of her, and the current date is below her.The reverse depicts a heraldic eagle design, created by the Chief Engraver of the US Mint, John Mercanti. An American bald eagle is the central vignette. The eagle has a shield covering her chest. There are 13 five-pointed stars arranged above the eagle. Around the peripheries are “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” and “1 OZ. FINE SILVER – ONE DOLLAR.” This coin was graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC), which is one of the major, independent, third-party grading services.
