History

Due to the passing of Queen Elizabeth II in September of 2022, the throne passed to the oldest male heir – Charles – who was previously the Duke of Wales. On May 6, 2023, the United Kingdom celebrated a coronation of their new king as is custom. Who was crowned at Westminster Abbey.
The Royal Mint struck a series of “Coronation Coins” in both Brilliant Uncirculated and Proof conditions to honor the new monarch. Of these, the highest denomination struck was the Five Pound Sovereign.

Design

This coin was struck in 22 carat gold (.9167 Fine Gold), and it was struck in both Brilliant Uncirculated and Proof conditions. It was decided that since Queen Elizabeth II faced to the right on her coinage, King Charles III would face to the left, as is the British custom.
This new effigy of King Charles III was designed by Martin Jennings, a well-respected sculptor in the United Kingdom. Charles III  is depicted as wearing the Tudor Crown. King Charles’ portrait is surrounded by the Latin inscription “CHARLES III – DEI – GRA – REX – FID – DEF,” which translates to “Charles III, by the Grace of God, King, Defender of the Faith.”
The reverse side of the coin depicts the famous “Saint George slaying the Dragon” motif first used on the 1817 sovereign gold coin. Sovereigns are known around the world and recognized as important British gold coinage. The artist’s initials “B.P.” and the date “2023” are below. The artist was an Italian coin engraver named Benedetto Pistrucci. The legend of Saint George slaying a dragon has been enshrined in British history for centuries.
“Saint George” was actually a Roman soldier who lived in the 3rd Century AD. He became a martyr when he was put to death by the Roman Emperor Diocletian when he refused to renounce his Christian faith.
Throughout the centuries, Saint George slaying the Dragon became synonymous with the struggle between Good (Saint Geirge) and Evil (the Dragon). It is also inextricably liked to British history and culture.
This Five Pound Sovereign coin is the largest gold coin denomination available today.
