History
The 1986 American Gold Eagle bullion program has been a great success for the US Mint and for the gold and silver buying public. In 2006, the US Mint began a new bullion program as well. The American Gold Buffalo coin program was launched to offer the marketplace the very first gold coin comprised of .9999 pure gold.This coin was created to compare with other pure gold coins in the marketplace. The designs of this coin were sure to please the American public as the designs were previously very successful.
Design
The obverse of the coin is a faithful reproduction of James Earle Fraser’s iconic Buffalo Nickel. The obverse design of the Native American warrior is a composite of several Native American chiefs who modeled for Fraser. The reverse design is Fraser’s depiction of Black Diamond, the American Bison, who was in the Central Park Zoo during the turn of the 20th Century.These American Buffalo coins were first struck in 2006 and have been issued annually since their inception. The 1 Troy Ounce coin bears a $50.00 denomination. In 2008, $5 (1/10th Troy Ounce) a $10 (1/4 Troy Ounce) and a $25 (1/2 Troy Ounce) fractional coins were also issued during 2008 for that year only.
