History

In 1986, the US Mint, directed by Congress, established the very first American gold and silver bullion coin program. When the US Mint began striking coins in 1793, the amount of gold and silver contained in the coins was based on the actual dollar value of the precious metal and the denomination of the coin. A Dollar actually contained a Dollar’s worth of silver. That is why the weights of numerous coins changed over the decades as the price of gold and silver fluctuated.
After watching the international success of the South African Krugerrand, the Canadian Maple Leaf and the Chinese Panda, the US Mint realized that the American public, which once again could own gold, definitely had an appetite for an American bullion coin.
The programs, without question, have been a rousing success for both silver and gold bullion coins and to a lesser degree platinum and palladium.
The American Gold Eagle bullion coin program has kindled the desire of the American public to own gold and silver coins and to make them a part of an investment plan.

Design

The American Gold Eagle bullion coin is a 22-carat (.9167 Fine Gold) coin containing One Troy Ounce of gold bullion. The design of the coin was a proven winner, as they faithfully copied the design of the 1907 – 1933 $20.00 Gold Double Eagle, which was crafted by Augustus Saint-Gaudens.  This design, first selected for the obverse of the gold bullion coin, has remained unchanged since 1986.
The reverse of the American Gold Eagle utilized the “Family of Eagles” design from 1986 through 2021. But part way through 2021, new reverse designs were chosen for both the gold and silver coins,]. The new reverse design on the gold eagle was now a closeup of the American Bald Eagle’s face and head, created by coin engraver Jennie Norris.
This 2024 American Gold Eagle has been graded as MS70, the highest possible grade, by the Professional Coin Grading Service, PCGS, one of the largest and most respected independent, third-party, grading services. PCGS also designated this coin as a First Strike (FS), which means it was struck by the US Mint within the first 30 days after the launch of the program, making it even more desirable.
