American Silver Eagle coins have been popular ever since they were first minted in 1986. The program authorizing these silver and gold American bullion coins was passed by Congress in 1985.
These silver bullion coin have been especially popular with collectors as they are much more affordable than even the smaller fractional gold coins. Additionally, the US Mint picked a very popular design for the coins. The obverse is a faithful rendition of Adolph Weinman’s much-appreciated ‘Walking Liberty ‘ design. This design first appeared on the Walking Liberty series of half dollar coins that were minted between 1916 and 1947.
The obverse depicts a rising sun with rays emanating from it. In front of the sun is an allegorical rendition of Miss Liberty, who is walking to her right. She extends her right hand in a friendly manner and in her left arm she cradles a bundle of olive branches. The word “LIBERTY” is above her on the upper periphery, while “IN GOD WE TRUST,” appears in the open right field. The current date of striking is immediately below her.
The reverse was re-designed in April of 2021. Between 1986 when they were first struck and early April of 2021 the reverse depicted John Mercanti’s Heraldic Eagle design. This was influenced by the early (1798 to 1804) Silver Dollars. These Heraldic reverse Silver Eagles are called the Type I coins. In April of 2021, the reverse was re-designed and a new ‘Flying Eagle’ design, created by artist Emily Damstra, supplanted the old design. These coins depict an American Bald Eagle flying, holding an olive branch, about to land. These are called the Type II design, and it carries all of the typical mottoes and denomination.
This particular coin is a 2024 American Silver Eagle bullion coin. It is struck from .999 Fine Silver and weighs One Troy Ounce, as all American Silver Eagle bullion coins do. It has been graded as MS70 and is housed in a Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) holder that depicts the Statue of Liberty in the foreground and the New York City skyline in the background.
On the NGC holder insert is the grade, MS70, which indicates that the coin is virtually mark-free and nearly perfect. There is also a designation of being an “EARLY RELEASE”  coin. The “EARLY RELEASE “ designation means it was delivered to NGC for grading within 30 days of release.  NGC was one of the first independent, third-party grading services and their grading is recognized and accepted worldwide. This is a great coin for the collector or investor.
