History
1987 was the first year that the Royal Mint introduced their Britannia Gold bullion coins program. They were the fifth nation to recognize the value and importance of having a bullion-focused coin that contained the amounts of precious metal that investors and collectors wanted.
The One-Half Ounce Gold Britannia was introduced that inaugural year, along with other sizes. The Brittania Gold coins struck between 1987 and 2012 were struck in 22 carat gold (.9167), while the 2013 to present coins were struck in 24 carat gold (.9999).
Design
Additionally, the coins struck between 1987 and 2023 bear the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse. Since the Queen passed in late 2022, the Royal Mint commissioned a new effigy of the new monarch.
Beginning in 2024, a new effigy of King Charles III, graces all new British coins. While the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II faced to the right, the effigy of King Charles will face to the left, in keeping with tradition.
The portrait displays King Charles III with the Latin inscription as follows “CHARLES III – D. – G. – REX – F. - D.” and “50 POUNDS.” The Latin inscription is translated to “CHARLES III, BY THE GRACE OF GOD, KING, DEFENDER OF THE FAITH.”
Philip Nathan designed the reverse of this coin, and it depicts an allegorical rendition of Britannia, standing tall against gale-force winds, looking to her right, She is in flowing robes and wearing a Corinthian-style helmet. In her right hand is a trident and in her left is an olive branch as well as a large shield, Across the shield is a Union Jack symbol.
