History
This category of British Sovereigns contains coins of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, who served as monarch from 1952 until her passing in September of 2022. Queen Elizabeth II was replaced on the obverse of the sovereign by King Charles III in 2023.
The first British Gold Sovereign bearing her likeness of the young Queen Elizabeth II was struck in 1957. Because she reigned for many years, a collection of all of the gold sovereigns just portraying Queen Elizabeth II’s portrait would be very impressive.
Design
The Queen’s changing appearance was reflected in the various new portraits that were created during her reign. The typical obverse portrait of the Queen is accompanied by a Latin inscription to the effect of “ELIZABETH II, BY THE GRACE OF GOD, QUEEN, DEFENDER OF THE FAITH.”
The reverse design, originally crafted by the Italian Engraver and Medallist, Benedetto Pistrucci, was first used on a British gold sovereign in 1817. This design is emblematic of British gold sovereigns and the Saint George Slaying the Dragon motif and represents the struggle and victory of ‘good’ over ‘evil.’
This listing will contain gold sovereigns depicting the reign of Queen Elizabeth II only. The coins are 22 carat (.9167 Fine Gold) and contain .2354 of a Troy Ounce of pure gold. These are some of the most well-recognized gold coins in the entire world.
