History
French gold coins have been popular in the world market for centuries. The most popular and well-known design is the 20 Franc French ‘Rooster’ gold coins.
These particular coins were struck between 1899 and 1914. Before the innovation of fractional gold coins (those weighing less than 1 Troy Ounce), these smaller gold coins were the needs of collectors, investors, and commerce well.
These coins are all struck in .900 Fine Gold, and each has an actual gold weight of .1867 of a Troy Ounce.
Design
Just as many United States coins carry the bust of ‘Miss Liberty’ – an allegorical representation of on an American ideal, this French coin depicts France’s national allegorical personage ‘Marianne’ who represents the French ideal of ‘Liberty, Equality and Fraternity,’ in her image.  Her image was created by the noted artist J. C. Chaplain.
The reverse of this gold coin depicts a Rooster (‘le coq gaulois’) – the Gallic Rooster, which is another symbol of France, akin to the American Bald Eagle represents America.
This .900 Fine Gold coin contains .1867 of a Troy Ounce of pure gold. The French Gold Rooster coins are some of the most popular gold coins of Europe along with the Swiss Gold 20 Francs coins as well.
These coins were struck at the Monnaie de Paris, in Paris which has been striking coins for centuries. It was originally founded in 864 AD, which is 928 years before the US Mint was founded in Philadelphia in 1792. These coins will be in varying grades of circulation.
