History
Italy is a country that evolved from the great Roman Empire that conquered most of the known world at their time of power for nearly 800 years. But during and after the Middle Ages and the Renaissance Italy was seemingly comprised of many small city-states that acting as their own country and in their own interests.
But by 1861, the Unification of Italy had begun, and numerous wars were fought to create a Kingdom. In 1861, Victor Emmanuel II was proclaimed as King of Italy, and he served in that role until his death in 1878.
Victor Emmanuel was succeeded by his son, Umberto, who was a general by profession. He had a militaristic view of the world and embroiled Italy in various disputes that involved Italy acquiring colonies in various corners of the globe. Umberto I served as king from his father’s death in 1878 until his own assassination in 1900.
It was during the reign of these two Kings that the Italian 20 Lire Gold coins were struck in great quantities. They were struck in .900 Fine gold and contained 0.1867 of a Troy Ounce of pure gold.
These Italian 20 Lire gold coins contain the same amount of gold as the 20 Franc Franch Roosters, the Belgian 20 Franc coins and the Swiss 20 Franc Vreneli gold coins.
Design
The Italian 20 Lire gold coins were minted at numerous mints across Italy until 1900. The obverse of the coin carries the portrait of the Italian monarch at the time and the date was below.
The reverse depicts the Coat of Arms of Italy, topped with a crown, above a shield that became the national seal. This is displayed inside a wreath of olive and oak branches and the 20 Lire denomination.
