History
Canadian Maple Leaf coins were first available to the public in 1979. They were Canada’s answer to the Krugerrand. Seeing South Africa’s success in marketing Troy Ounce coins to a bullion-hungry world, Canada, with their vast gold reserves needed to join the fray.
Between1979 and 1982, the Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) only offered One Troy Iunce gold coins, all of which were .999 Fine. In November of 1982 through 1985, the RCM added a ¼ and a 1/10th Troy Ounce coins. But now the coins were .9999 Fine Gold, which is what they still offer today.
Design
A year later, in 1986, the One-Half Troy Ounce gold coin was added to the lineup and all of the bullion coins remain at .9999 Fine Gold. The obverse of all of the bullion coins depicted Queen Elizabeth II from their inception in 1979 through the 2023 year.
Beginning in 2024, the new gold coins bear the effigy of the new monarch, King Charles III. The King’s portrait is displayed on the obverse, and he is facing left. Above his portrait is “CHARLES III” and below it is “20 DOLLARS – 2024.” The obverse also features strong and visible radial lines in the fields, which were added to deter counterfeiting.
The reverse of the Gold Maple Leaf bears Canada’s national symbol – the Maple Leaf design. Around it are “Canada,” above, and below are “FINE GOLD – ½ OZ OR PUR,” with “9999” on both sides of the Maple Leaf.
