History

For almost 5,000 years, gold has been treasured by civilizations as a real store of value. Over these millennia, gold has become jewelry, crowns, chalices, and predominantly coins. All of the ancient civilizations - Egypt, Greece, Rome, Byzantine – used gold coins to represent value and wealth.  From the wealth of the emperors to payment to their soldiers, gold and silver represented value.
While gold coins dominated the primary use for gold, bars were struck to represent large amounts of value, Bars were struck and shipped for security reasons – harder to hide, much more value in a bar.
But it is believed that 95% of all gold ever mined throughout all history, still exists. The gold ring that you might be wearing may have come from a European gold coin, and that from a Renaissance-era crucifix, and that from an ancient golden goblet. When it’s usefulness is over, it just gets melted and later it gets re-melted, and it takes on an entirely new life.
