History
The success of the American Gold Eagle bullion coins and their silver bullion coin counterparts assured that the United States Mint would try to expand on the program.
In 2007, the Mint launched the American Platinum Eagle bullion coins program. The bullion coins were struck, in the denomination of $100 and were comprised of One Troy Ounce of .9995 Fine Platinum. These coins have been struck on an annual basis. They were the very first Platinum coins that the US Mint ever struck, and they qualify for inclusion in a Precious Metals IRA.
Design
The obverse of the coin depicts a closeup of the Statue of Liberty facing the viewer, with the word “LIBERTY” adorns the upper periphery with the letters separated by the spikes of her crown, with the current date and “IN GOD WE TRUST” in the right field. The coin was designed by John Mercanti and is called “Liberty Looking to the Future.”
The reverse depicts an American Bald Eagle flying over land with he sun rising in the background. It was designed by Thomas D. Rogers and is called “Soaring Eagle Over America.” “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “.9995 PLATINUM 1 OZ,” are all in the open right field. The land below is inscribed with the denomination, “$100.”
