The 1847 $10 Liberty Head Eagle is a standout example from the formative years of U.S. gold coinage. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this classic coin captures the strength of America’s expanding economy before the discovery of California gold. Certified Mint State 61 by NGC and verified by CAC, this piece offers both investment potential and historical interest.
Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the obverse features a graceful portrait of Liberty facing left, crowned with a coronet inscribed with the word “LIBERTY.” Thirteen stars encircle the portrait, representing the original colonies. On the reverse, the American eagle stands proudly with a shield on its breast, grasping arrows and an olive branch in its talons. The absence of the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” marks it as a pre-Civil War “No Motto” variety, which is highly desirable among type set collectors.
This particular coin exhibits soft golden luster across the fields with frosty devices and strong eye appeal for its grade. It shows typical light contact marks expected at MS61, but the coin retains bold detail and excellent overall preservation. The CAC sticker adds a layer of quality assurance, confirming that this piece is solid for the grade and a premium example within its classification.
The 1847 issue saw a high mintage, but most pieces were used in circulation for decades. Finding a well-struck, problem-free Mint State example is uncommon. This coin is ideal for collectors looking to add a certified early eagle to their U.S. gold type set or for investors who value scarce Mint State pre-1850 gold.
