Introduction
The 1874-S $20 Liberty Head Double Eagle is a powerful representation of classic American gold coinage struck during the nation’s rapid westward and economic expansion. Produced at the San Francisco Mint, this issue reflects the importance of gold in large commercial transactions and international trade. Certified PCGS AU55, this example offers strong detail, pleasing surfaces, and authentic circulation character from the heart of the 19th-century gold era.
History
The Liberty Head Double Eagle series was minted from 1850 through 1907 and served as the highest regular-issue gold denomination of its time. By the early 1870s, San Francisco had become the primary source of double eagles, fueled by continued Western mining output and global demand for reliable gold coinage.
The 1874-S issue circulated heavily both domestically and overseas, particularly in Asia and Europe, where U.S. gold coins were widely accepted in trade. Many examples were worn extensively or later melted, making survivors in higher circulated grades increasingly sought after by collectors.
Design
Designed by James B. Longacre, the obverse features Liberty facing left, wearing a coronet inscribed with Liberty. Thirteen stars surround the portrait, symbolizing the original colonies, with the date placed below. The design is stately and balanced, embodying the authority and confidence of mid-19th-century American coinage.
The reverse displays a heraldic eagle with outstretched wings, clutching an olive branch and arrows to represent peace and preparedness. The inscriptions United States of America and Twenty D. encircle the design, with the S mintmark visible beneath the eagle. In AU55 condition, this coin retains strong design detail with light, even wear and appealing overall eye appeal.
