Introduction
The 1876-S $20 Liberty Head Double Eagle is a substantial and historically rich example of classic American gold coinage. Struck at the San Francisco Mint during a period of rapid Western growth, this issue reflects the economic power and confidence of post–Civil War America. Certified NGC AU50, this coin offers strong detail and original character while retaining the unmistakable presence of a true gold workhorse of its era.
History
The Liberty Head Double Eagle series was produced from 1850 through 1907 and played a central role in large-scale commerce, banking, and international trade. By 1876, San Francisco had become the dominant mint for gold coinage, fueled by continued output from Western mining operations.
Coins dated 1876-S circulated heavily in domestic and overseas markets, particularly in Asia and Europe, where U.S. gold was widely accepted. Many examples were worn extensively or later melted, making surviving pieces with honest circulation and strong detail increasingly desirable to collectors today.
Design
Designed by James B. Longacre, the obverse features Liberty facing left, wearing a coronet inscribed with Liberty. Thirteen stars encircle the portrait, representing the original colonies, with the date placed below. The design conveys strength and stability, hallmarks of mid-19th century American coinage.
The reverse displays a heraldic eagle with outstretched wings, holding an olive branch and arrows as symbols of peace and readiness. The inscriptions United States of America and Twenty D. frame the design, with the S mintmark positioned below the eagle. In AU50 condition, this coin shows moderate, even wear while retaining clear design elements and substantial visual appeal.
