Introduction
The 1879 $4 Flowing Hair Stella graded NGC PR64 CAC stands among the most iconic and desirable patterns in all of U.S. numismatics. Conceived during a bold experiment to create an international trade coin, the Stella represents both artistic mastery and historical significance. With its proof strike, radiant mirrors, and CAC verification for superior quality, this PR64 example captures the essence of 19th-century minting excellence and the enduring fascination collectors hold for the nation's rarest coinage.
History
The Stella—named after the Latin word for “star,” which appears on its reverse—was proposed in 1879 as part of an effort to align U.S. coinage with international gold standards. Designed to contain approximately the same gold content as several European trade coins, the $4 denomination was championed by Congressman John A. Kasson. Although the idea gained momentary traction, it was soon abandoned, leaving behind a limited production of fewer than 500 pieces. Most were distributed to members of Congress as presentation pieces, and many were mishandled or circulated lightly. Surviving examples like this NGC PR64 CAC are true treasures—bridging artistry, innovation, and American monetary history.
Design
The 1879 $4 Flowing Hair Stella features the work of Chief Engraver Charles E. Barber. The obverse portrays a classical bust of Liberty with flowing hair, symbolizing freedom and grace. Around her are the inscriptions “✶ 6 G .3 S .7 C .7 G .R.A.M.S ✶” denoting the coin’s metallic composition, and “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.” The reverse, by George T. Morgan, displays a prominent five-pointed star at center—the “stella”—encircled by the inscriptions “ONE STELLA” and “400 CENTS,” along with the Latin motto “DEO EST GLORIA” (“To God is the Glory”). Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper and measuring approximately 22 mm in diameter, this Proof-64 specimen glows with deeply mirrored fields and frosted reliefs, embodying the finest traditions of U.S. coinage artistry.
