Introduction

The 1881 3 Cent Nickel represents one of the finest surviving examples of this short-lived and often overlooked denomination. Graded NGC PR66, this Proof issue showcases exceptional strike quality, mirrored fields, and crisp design elements that define high-end 19th-century U.S. Mint craftsmanship. With extremely limited production and strong collector demand, the 1881 Proof 3 Cent Nickel stands as a refined and desirable addition to any advanced numismatic collection.

History

First introduced in 1865, the Three Cent Nickel was created to address coin shortages during the Civil War era. By 1881, the denomination had largely fallen out of favor in everyday commerce, and most examples struck that year were produced specifically as Proof coins for collectors. With a Proof mintage of just 3,575 pieces, the 1881 issue reflects the growing interest in numismatics during the late 19th century. Today, high-grade Proof examples are prized for both their scarcity and their representation of a transitional period in American coinage.

Design

Its obverse features a left-facing Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed with "LIBERTY". The portrait is surrounded by the inscription "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" with the year located at the bottom. The reverse displays a large Roman numeral III encircled by a wreath. The bold simplicity of the Roman numeral paired with intricate wreath detailing creates a balanced and distinctive appearance unique to the Three Cent Nickel series.
