Introduction
The 1909-S VDB Lincoln Cent stands as one of the most famous and desirable key dates in all of U.S. coinage. This coin, certified MS64 BN by NGC and verified by CAC for superior quality, offers collectors a stunning example of the first-year issue of America’s longest-running coin series. With its sharp strike, rich brown surfaces, and excellent eye appeal, this piece represents both historical importance and investment-grade rarity.
History
The 1909-S VDB Lincoln Cent was struck at the San Francisco Mint during the first year of the Lincoln cent’s release, designed by sculptor Victor David Brenner. Only 484,000 pieces were minted before the U.S. Mint removed Brenner’s initials “V.D.B.” from the reverse, following public criticism over their prominence. This low mintage, combined with the immediate design change, created one of the most coveted key dates in U.S. numismatics.
Collectors have pursued the 1909-S VDB for generations as the cornerstone of the Lincoln cent series. Surviving examples in Mint State condition, especially those certified and CAC-approved, are highly prized for their historical significance and rarity.
Design
The obverse features a right-facing portrait of President Abraham Lincoln, the first real person ever depicted on a U.S. coin. The design was created to commemorate the centennial of Lincoln’s birth. The reverse bears two wheat stalks surrounding the denomination ONE CENT, which gives rise to the coin’s popular nickname—the “Wheat Cent.”
This NGC MS64 BN CAC example showcases strong details across Lincoln’s portrait, crisp lettering, and well-defined wheat ears. Its rich brown patina and subtle hints of luster reflect its originality and preservation, making it a standout addition to any high-quality U.S. type set or Lincoln cent collection.
