Introduction
The 1911 $2.50 Indian Head Gold Quarter Eagle PCGS PR66 CAC is a masterpiece of early 20th-century American coinage. Struck in exquisite proof quality, this coin represents the pinnacle of Bela Lyon Pratt’s innovative incuse design. Certified PR66 by PCGS and verified by CAC for superior quality, this proof example combines exceptional eye appeal, mirror-like surfaces, and historical significance, making it one of the most desirable issues in the Indian Head Quarter Eagle series.
History
The Indian Head Quarter Eagle, introduced in 1908, was designed by sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt as part of President Theodore Roosevelt’s visionary effort to beautify America’s coinage. Pratt’s design was revolutionary, featuring incuse (sunken) relief instead of raised details—a first for U.S. coins.
Proof strikes like the 1911 issue were produced in extremely limited numbers at the Philadelphia Mint, intended primarily for collectors. Only 191 proof examples were struck in 1911, and far fewer survive today in high grades, making this coin a coveted rarity among advanced numismatists. The CAC endorsement further affirms its outstanding preservation and originality.
Design
The obverse depicts a left-facing Native American chief wearing a detailed feathered headdress, surrounded by thirteen stars and the word LIBERTY above, with the date 1911 below. The reverse showcases a proud bald eagle standing on a bundle of arrows and an olive branch, symbolizing America’s strength and peace.
The coin’s incuse design gives it a distinctive appearance and texture, unlike any other U.S. gold coin of its era. The proof strike features deeply mirrored fields and sharply defined devices, highlighting Pratt’s artistry and the Mint’s precision. The combination of Proof 66 quality and CAC approval makes this piece a premier example of pre-1933 numismatic craftsmanship.
