The 1911-D $2.50 Indian Head Quarter Eagle is one of the most iconic and important coins in the early 20th-century U.S. gold series. With a tiny mintage of just 55,680 pieces, it holds the title of the lowest production figure across the Indian Quarter Eagle series and stands as its undeniable key date. This stunning NGC MS64 example, further verified by CAC with a coveted Plus designation, delivers rare quality and historical importance in one exceptional package.
This coin features the distinctive and highly recognizable incuse design created by Bela Lyon Pratt. The sunken devices were innovative for their time, presenting a recessed profile of a Native American chief on the obverse and a regal bald eagle on the reverse. The design is rich in symbolism and speaks to a period in American coinage that emphasized bold creativity and national identity.
Minted in Denver, this particular issue carries the all-important D mintmark to the left of the arrows on the reverse. That small letter plays a big role in U.S. numismatic history, as the 1911-D has become the most sought-after coin in the entire series. The present example displays excellent surface preservation, warm golden luster, and sharp definition in the devices, particularly the headdress feathers and eagle’s wing detail.
