Introduction
The 1916 McKinley Gold Dollar commemorates the dedication of the McKinley Birthplace Memorial in Niles, Ohio, honoring the nation’s 25th president, William McKinley. Struck in 90% gold at the Philadelphia Mint, this brilliant commemorative coin represents one of the most refined small gold issues of the early 20th century. Graded PCGS MS66 and approved by CAC, this example offers outstanding luster, sharp detail, and superior preservation, placing it among the finest available for the type.
History
The McKinley Gold Dollar was authorized by Congress in 1916 to support construction of the McKinley Birthplace Memorial, following the president’s tragic assassination in 1901. Designed by Charles E. Barber, Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint, and his assistant George T. Morgan, the coin marked the second gold dollar in U.S. commemorative history—following the 1903 Louisiana Purchase Exposition issue.
A total of 15,000 coins were minted in 1916, with additional pieces struck in 1917. Many were melted after limited public interest, making surviving high-grade examples like this one particularly scarce. Today, the McKinley Gold Dollar stands as a symbol of national remembrance and early 20th-century mint craftsmanship.
Design
The obverse features a right-facing portrait of President William McKinley, with the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and 1916 encircling the design. The detailed portrait conveys both dignity and realism, capturing McKinley’s distinguished presence.
The reverse depicts the McKinley Birthplace Memorial Building in Niles, Ohio—an architectural tribute to the late president’s life and legacy. Above the structure appears the word ONE, while DOLLAR and the motto IN GOD WE TRUST complete the composition.
This PCGS MS66 CAC example displays frosty gold surfaces, vibrant mint luster, and remarkable eye appeal. Its high grade and CAC approval confirm superior quality among surviving specimens, making it an exceptional choice for advanced collectors of classic U.S. commemorative gold coinage.
