Introduction
The 1922 Grant $1 Gold With Star is one of the most desirable issues within the classic United States commemorative gold series. Struck to honor the centennial of Ulysses S. Grant’s birth, the “With Star” variety represents a limited and distinctive subset of the already low-mintage issue. Graded PCGS MS67 and approved by CAC, this example stands among the finest preserved survivors, offering exceptional luster, sharp detail, and elite collector appeal.
History
Issued in 1922, the Grant commemorative gold dollar was created to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Ulysses S. Grant, Civil War general and 18th President of the United States. A small number of these coins were struck with a star on the obverse, believed to represent Grant’s rank as General of the Army. These “With Star” examples were sold at a premium and in significantly lower quantities than the standard issue. Today, they are recognized as one of the key varieties in the commemorative gold series, with high-grade examples being especially scarce.
Design
The obverse features a portrait of Ulysses S. Grant facing left, with a small star positioned near the lower right of the portrait, distinguishing this special variety. Inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and GRANT, along with the commemorative dates marking the centennial of his birth. The design presents a clean and dignified tribute to one of America’s most prominent historical figures.
The reverse depicts Grant’s birthplace, a modest log cabin, emphasizing his humble beginnings. Surrounding inscriptions include the denomination 1 DOLLAR and commemorative legends honoring the occasion. The simplicity of the design highlights the historical significance of Grant’s life and legacy, creating a powerful contrast between origin and achievement.
