The 1955 Doubled Die Lincoln Cent is one of the most legendary mint errors in American coinage. With its dramatic and unmistakable doubling on the obverse, this coin quickly rose to fame after release and remains one of the most desirable varieties in the Lincoln Cent series. This MS64 Brown example, graded by PCGS and certified by CAC, is a high-end specimen with excellent visual appeal and historical significance.

Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, the coin displays strong doubling on the inscriptions “IN GOD WE TRUST,” “LIBERTY,” and the date “1955.” This doubling occurred due to a misalignment during the die production process, causing a single die to receive two impressions that were out of register. While the Mint eventually discovered the issue, thousands had already entered circulation, and the error became an overnight sensation.

This example retains sharp detail and luster consistent with the MS64 grade. The brown toning is rich and even, with hints of underlying brilliance that highlight the devices. The coin has been awarded a CAC sticker, signifying it meets strict standards for quality and originality within the grade.

Collectors value the 1955 Doubled Die not only for its striking appearance but also for its place in minting history. Few varieties can match the boldness of this coin’s doubling, and even fewer are so well known to the public and hobby alike. Its popularity has remained strong across generations of collectors.

A LITTLE STICKER MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE.

Within each number of the coin grading scale is a small range of condition from low-end to high-end. Certified coins of the same grade can be of varying quality. Many of today’s collectors want coins that are solid or premium quality for their assigned grade. CAC holds coins to a higher standard so you can be confident in the value of yours. We verify previously graded coins … and award our sticker only to those coins that meet the standard for today’s selective buyer.

WHAT THE CAC STICKER MEANS:

  • Verified. Your coin has been verified as meeting the standard for strict quality within its grade.
  • Guaranteed. CAC stands behind our verification.

THE CAC STICKER IS BACKED BY EXPERIENCE.

CAC was founded by leading members of the numismatic community, including John Albanese, a respected authority on coin grading and the rare coin market.
