History
In 1986, the United States Mint began to strike Silver and Gold coins as part of the American Eagle Bullion Coin program. The hope was that these gold and silver bullion coins would be successful in the marketplace and be able to compete with other world bullion coins.
The American coin-buying public embraced these coins with open arms. They loved the fact that now not only could they buy gold and silver coins for investment, now there were American-made options for them to choose from and enjoy.
Design
The American Silver Eagle bullion coin program was a great success right from the start. The coins had a fantastic design – the Mint recreated Adolph Weinman’s highly acclaimed “Walking Liberty” design which was used for American Half Dollar coins from 1916 to 1947. It is a much admired design. It displays Miss Liberty wrapped in flowing robes and an American flag, her right arm outstretched in friendship, her left hand holding olive branches as the sun rises behind her.
The reverse was crafted by the Chief Engraver of the United States Mint John Mercanti, who did an excellent and more modern rendition of a heraldic American eagle with a shield on its chest, and (13) 5-pointed stars above.
With such a great design, how could this coin not be successful?
This coin is a 1986-S American Silver Eagle coin that was graded as a Proof-70 (PERFECT) Ultra Cameo. Coins graded Proof-70 are at the top of the condition scale. And those Proof-70 coins that are also graded as “ULTRA CAMEO” have frosted devices and mirrored fields. They are the most desirable of all Proof coins.
The coin was graded and encapsulated by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) which is one of the major, independent coin grading services in the world. One a small handful of these grading services have worldwide recognition and wide dealer support, and NGC is one of them.
Scarcity, and unimprovable quality is a great combination.
