Introduction
The 1987-S 1 oz Silver Eagle PCGS PR69DCAM is a stunning high-grade proof example from the second year of the Silver Eagle program. Struck at the San Francisco Mint with exceptional precision, this coin displays deeply mirrored fields and heavily frosted devices that create the dramatic Deep Cameo contrast collectors prize. Graded PR69 Deep Cameo by PCGS, this piece offers near-flawless quality, superior visual appeal, and strong long-term numismatic desirability.
History
The American Silver Eagle series debuted in 1986 as the official silver bullion coin of the United States. Alongside the bullion releases, the U.S. Mint also introduced a limited number of proof coins crafted specifically for collectors. The 1987-S Proof Silver Eagle represents only the second year of this special issue, produced exclusively at the San Francisco Mint. Early proof Silver Eagles such as this one are sought after for their low mintages, historical significance, and the premium craftsmanship of the San Francisco facility.
Design
The obverse features Adolph A. Weinman’s iconic Walking Liberty design, originally introduced in 1916 and celebrated as one of the most beautiful motifs in American numismatics. Liberty strides toward the rising sun, draped in the American flag and carrying branches of oak and laurel. The reverse, designed by John Mercanti, showcases a heraldic eagle with a shield, clutching arrows and an olive branch while supporting a banner with the inscription “E PLURIBUS UNUM.” The proof strike, with its deep cameo finish, enhances every sculpted detail, making this 1987-S example a standout collector piece.
