In 1986, the American Silver Eagle bullion coin program was implemented. It was extremely well-received and in demand. Collectors and investors both wanted and enjoyed these coins.
The obverse of the coin depicted Adolph Weinman’s famous ‘Walking Liberty,’ design. The coin depicts Miss Liberty, walking towards the viewers’ left. Her hand is outstretched as a friendly gesture as she carries a bundle of olive branches. She is wearing flowing robes as the sun rises behind her. The phrases “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the current year of striking are depicted on the obverse.
The reverse displays Chief Engraver John Mercanti’s Heraldic Eagle design. The eagle is the central vignette, her wings are outstretched upwards, there are arrows in one talon and olive branches in the other. In her beak is a banner on which is inscribed, “E PLURIBUS UNUM.” There are 13 stars above the eagle. Around the periphery are the mottoes, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” and “1 OZ. FINE SILVER – ONE DOLLAR.”
This coin is graded as ‘MS69,’ by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). NGC is one of the major, independent, third-party grading services. Their opinion is highly-respected worldwide. The ‘MS69,’ grade indicates that this coin is one point away from perfection.
