History

In 2016, the United States Mint decided to issue a commemorative set of three gold coins. These three gold coins would honor the centennial of three silver coins – the 1916 Mercury Dime, the 1916 Standing Liberty Quarter, and the 1916 Walking Liberty Half Dollar.
These three coins were originally struck in 90% Silver in 1916. These designs have been revered as key designs in the Renaissance of American coinage.

Design

The 1916 Mercury Dime was originally designed by Adolph A Weinman. The obverse depicts Liberty wearing a winged cap. It was confused at the time, and consequently since that time as the Roman God of Mercury, due to the winged cap. Weinman wanted the cap to represent “Freedom of Thought.” The reverse depicts Roman fasces on the reverse. The 2016 version is struck in .9999 Fine Gold and weighs exactly 0.10 Troy Ounce.
The 1916 Standing Liberty Quarter was designed by Hermon A. MacNeill. His Quarter Dollar depicts Liberty striding forward between two battlements, possibly representing the two oceans that protected America in times past – the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The reverse has an American Eagle in flight surrounded by stars. The 2016 version was also struck in .9999 Fine Gold and weighs 0.25 Troy Ounce.
The final coin was the 1916 Walking Liberty Half Dollar. This coin, also designed by Weinman, displays Miss Liberty Walking towards the viewer, draped in robes and an American flag. The reverse depicts an American eagle. This design was also used on the American Silver Eagle bullion coins from 1986 to the present. The 2016 version is also struck in .9999 Fine Gold and weighs exactly 0.50 Troy Ounce.
All three coins were struck at the West Point Minting facility and bear the “W” mintmark. Each of the three coins has been graded as MS70 by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC), one of the largest, independent, third-party grading services.
This three-coin set contains a total of 0.85 Troy Ounces of pure gold combined in these three coins and each coin is of the very best quality.
