History

With the passing of Queen Elizabeth II in September of 2022, the heir to the throne was her son, Prince Charles. He was coronated on May 8, 2023, as King Charles III.
As tributes poured in from the world for the longest-serving monarch in British history, the new King assumed his royal duties. The Royal Mint needed an official portrait for all of its new coinage. In addition to the normal British coinage, the Royal Mint would also need to strike coins, specifically for the coronation.
Famed artist, Martin Jennings, crafted the official crowned coinage portrait of the new monarch. King Charles III wore the official Tudor crown, and his portrait was surrounded by the Latin inscription of “CHARLES III – DEI – GRA – REX – FID – DEF,” which translates to “CHARLES III, BY THE GRACE OF GOD, KING, DEFENDER OF THE FAITH.”

Design

The reverse utilizes the Sovereign tradition of utilizing the depiction of “Saint George slaying the Dragon,” created by Benedetto Pistrucci and first used on the 1817 Sovereign. It has adorned the reverse of all sovereign coinage ever since.
The Royal Mint only struck 950 Piedfort Sovereigns and were completely SOLD OUT at the Mint. A Piedfort coin is one that is extremely well-struck and is twice the thickness and weight of a regular coin. They are amazing and beautiful coins.
