History
The American Gold Eagle Program began in 1986. The US Mint wanted to offer gold bullion coins to collectors, investors, and dealers worldwide. The Mint struck these coins in 22 carat fineness (.9167 Fine Gold) and sizes as One Troy Ounce ($50 denomination), One-Half Troy Ounce ($25), One-Quarter Troy Ounce ($10), and One-Tenth Troy Ounce ($5) sizes. The coins are also struck in both Brilliant Uncirculated and in Proof.
Design
To ensure that the cons would have a great appeal to the public, the US Mint decided to choose a design that had already been a winner. The obverse of the American Gold Eagle displays the design originally created in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens for the $20 Gold Double Eagle.
The obverse faithfully reproduces the Saint-Gaudens’ design. Miss Liberty faces the viewer as she steps on a large rock. She holds a torch up high in her right hand and an olive branch in the other. She stands in front of the rays of a rising sun, the upper periphery is surrounded by tiny stars and far in the background is Washington, DC, as evidenced by the US Capitol.
The reverse has an original design by Jennie Norris which depicts the closeup of an American Bald Eagle’s head. This design was utilized halfway through 2021. Between 1986 and early in 2021, the reverse depicted the “Family of Eagles” design by Miley Busiek.
The One-Half Troy Ounce design is an excellent size as it is approximately half the cost of a One Troy Ounce coin, without the premium being tremendously increased.
