History
Gold bullion coins were first struck by the South African Mint in 1967. Prior to the arrival of the Krugerrand there were no gold coins that were struck in increments or fractions of Troy Ounces. The Krugerrand was the first true bullion coin, and its success was watched by the entire world.
The American Gold Eagle program was begun in 1986 to compete with the South Africa, China and Canada who all had issue gold bullion coins. The success of these countries with their bullion coins inspired Congress to create the American Gold Eagle bullion coin legislation.
The American Gold Eagle bullion coin program struck coins in One Troy Ounce, One-Half Troy Ounce, One-Quarter Troy Ounce, and One-Tenth Troy Ounce sizes.
Design
The obverse of the 2024 utilizes a faithful rendition of Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ $20.00 Gold Double Eagle. The reverse of this coin displays a closeup of the head of an American Bald Eagle, as created by artist Jennie Norris.
These coins are struck in 22 carat gold (.9167 Fine Gold), and each contain 0.25 Troy Ounces of pure gold.
