History
On May 6, 2023, the world celebrated the coronation of King Charles III. As is customary, he was crowned at West Minster Abbey as seen by a worldwide audience. The Royal Mint struck a premium proof set of five gold coins to honor the new monarch. All of the coins are struck in 22 carat (.9167 Fine Gold). Sovereign coinage is closely identified with the British monarchy and sovereign coins have been struck since 1817.
Design
This five-coin set includes a Quarter-Sovereign, a Half-Sovereign, a Sovereign, a Double-Sovereign, and a Five-Sovereign. The magnificent effigy of King Charles III depicts His Majesty facing to the left, which is opposite the earlier coinage portraits of his predecessor, and mother, Queen Elizabeth II.The effigy of the King was created by the celebrated British sculptor, Martin Jennings. The King is seen wearing the famous Tudor crown. King Charles III portrait is facing left and the Latin inscription around the periphery reads “CHARLES III – DEI – GRA – REX – FID – DEF,” which translates to “Charles III, by the Grace of God, King, Defender of the Faith.”
The reverse side of these coins depict the famous “Saint George slaying the Dragon” motif first used on the 1817 sovereign gold coin. That motif is synonymous with British Sovereign coinage and is immediately recognizable to collectors and investors worldwide. The artist’s initials “B.P.” (for Benedetto Pistrucci) and the date “2023” are below.
The five coins in this set comprise 64.07 total Grams which equals 2.0599 Troy Ounces of pure gold. The set will be enclosed in the original presentation packaging, as manufactured by the Royal Mint, including a numbered certificate of Authenticity.
Only 1,050 sets were struck for distribution worldwide.
