History
One of the Perth Mint’s most popular products is the Kangaroo series of gold coins, The series began in 1986 as the Australian Gold Nugget series, but by 1989 it had morphed into Kangaroos series. “Roos” are immediately and permanently identified with Australia. The Kangaroo series actually extends from when it took over the Gold Nugget series in 1989 to the present time. Of importance to collectors is the fact that these Kangaroo designs change every year, except for the 1987 to 1989 period. From solitary Kangaroos standing motionless, to families, to jumping figures, to Kangaroos standing in front of a rising sun - there are lots of great designs on these beautiful coins. There are also a wide variety of different sizes of these gold coins from One-Twentieth of a Troy Ounce to One Kilo of .9999 Fine Gold. There is even a One Tonne Gold coin for those with unlimited budgets. These coins are struck from .9999 Fine Gold.
Design
The obverse of these Kangaroo coins depicts the reigning monarch, so King Charles III effigy portrait by Dan Thorne, dominates the obverse on 2024 and subsequent coins. Surrounding the new monarch are the words “CHARLES III – AUSTRALIA – 100 DOLLARS.”The reverse displays an annual version of a Kangaroo, an animal synonymous with Australia. The Perth Mint designers try to design different and interesting versions of the Kangaroo each year. The reverse also contains the “P” mintmark for the Perth Mint, the weight, the fineness, the date, and the word “KANGAROO.”
