History

The Canadian Silver Maple Leaf bullion coins were first struck in 1979 by the Royal Canadian Mint. Canada, much like the United States, was inspired by the worldwide success of the South African Krugerrand. So, the RCM created and struck a gold bullion coin in 1979, and a silver bullion coin in 1988.

Design

There are differences between the American Silver Eagle bullion coin and the Canadian Silver Maple Leaf bullion coins. For example, the American Silver Eagle has a $1.00 denomination and contains One Troy Ounce of .999 Fine Silver. The Canadian Silver Maple on the other hand has a $5.00 denomination and contains One Troy Ounce of .9999 Fine Silver. But like the American Silver Eagle Monster Box, the Canadian Silver Maple Leaf Monster Box both contain 500 Troy Ounces of Silver. While the US Mint’s Monster Box is made of a highly durable green plastic, the Royal Canadian Mint’s Monster Box is made of a similar heavy-duty plastic that is yellow in color. Both boxes come from their respective mints strapped and banded.
Inside the US Mint’s Monster Box there are 25 tubes of 20 coins each. The Royal Canadian Mint’s Monster Boxes contain 20 tubes holding 25 coins each. Canadian Silver Maple Leaf coins are includable in Precious Metal IRA accounts.
The Silver Maple Leaf coin has changed designs more often than its American counterpart. The 1988 – 1989 coins have a portrait of a young Queen Elizabeth II; the 1990 to 2003 coins have a more middle-aged portrait of her as well; the 2004 to 2023 coins have a mature portrait of the Queen. With her passing, all 2024 and future coins will bear a portrait of the new monarch, King Charles III.
The reverse’s basic design of a Maple Leaf remains essentially unchanged, except coins from 2014 onward have had security measures added such as radial lines in the fields and laser-engraved micro printing.
Royal Canadian Mint Monster Boxes are even scarcer than the US Mint’s version so finding any available for purchase is quite challenging and they are always in demand.
