History
The Canadian Platinum Maple Leaf bullion coin was introduced in 1988. It joined the highly successful Maple Leaf program which promoted gold and silver Maple Leaf bullion coins. The coin contained One Troy Ounce of .9995 Fine Platinum.
Design
The coin follows the Royal Canadian Mint’s (RCM) design pattern and  all coins struck from 1988 through 2023 will have the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse. 2024 and later coins will bear the effigy of the newly-crowned King Charles III.
The obverse also is inscribed as “ELIZABETH II,” “50 DOLLARS” and the year. The 2024 coins, due to the change in the monarchy display “CHARLES III” instead of Elizabeth. The fields are filled with radial lines.
The reverse of the coin has the very familiar Maple Leaf design. The upper periphery displays “CANADA,” and the lower periphery displays “FINE PLATINUM – 1 OZ PLATINE PUR,” and the fineness “.9995” is shown on both sides of the Maple Leaf. The fields have radial lines to deter counterfeiting and the lower right has the Maple Leaf-shaped privy mark.
These One Troy Ounce Platinum Maple Leaf coins are part of the Bullion DNA Program which features a textured Maple Leaf security privy mark stamped into the coin. This privy mark is micro-engraved by lasers with the two digits of the date when placed under magnification.
